Medical disclaimer
Steady and Safe is for general education, including its articles, checklists, graphics, and product suggestions. It is not medical advice, and it isn't a substitute for professional diagnosis, treatment, or a professional evaluation of your loved one, their health, their recovery, or their home. Never ignore professional advice or delay getting it because of something you read here.
Talk to their care team
Every person moves differently. Before you choose equipment or change how your parent bathes, talk with their doctor, physical therapist (PT), or occupational therapist (OT) about fit, fall risk, and what's safe for them. An OT can do a home safety assessment and recommend specific equipment and grab bar placement.
After surgery, follow the surgical team
If your loved one is recovering from surgery, such as a hip or knee replacement, their surgeon's and therapist's instructions come first: how to sit, stand, and bathe, which equipment to use, seat heights, and how long any restrictions last. Guides on this site are general background to help you prepare and ask good questions, never a replacement for those instructions.
No product prevents every fall
Grab bars, seats, and other aids can make tasks easier and more stable, but no product can promise to prevent falls or injuries. Equipment only helps if it fits the person and is installed and used correctly. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and weight limits, and use a qualified installer for anything mounted to a wall. I'm not responsible for injury or damage from the selection, installation, or use of any product.
In an emergency
If your parent has fallen and is hurt, or you think they may be having a medical emergency, call 911. If someone may be hurt after a fall, don't rush to get them up. Call for help.
Sources and accuracy
I link health information to its source (such as CDC, ADA standards, and hospital patient-education pages) and date every guide. Health guidance, insurance and Medicare coverage, and product details change, and I may make mistakes, so I can't guarantee everything is complete or current. Coverage depends on the plan, so confirm with the plan directly. If you spot a mistake, please let me know.
No professional relationship
Reading this site or contacting me doesn't create a doctor-patient or any other professional relationship.
Outside links
I link to outside sites, like government health pages and manufacturers, for your convenience. I don't control their content and am not responsible for it.
